- PC SHORTWAVE MONITOR(tm) is a frequency management program designed to
- eliminate the constant searching thru "general" SW broadcast listings
- that do not apply to your geographic area. Besides organizing your
- "loggings," this program will let you create a variety of customized
- listening schedules. These also can be saved as ASCII files or printed
- reports. QSL requests can be automatically generated, along with
- options for printing broadcast station mailing labels and personal
- return address labels. There is an import/export utility to share
- files with other users (expecially useful for clubs/organizations when
- building a master list).

- * * * OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS * * *
- Enter <SW3> to start.
-
- All transactions are done through the main menu. Position highlight
- bar and press <ENTER> or type letter/number before bracket as follows:
-
-
-
-
- * * Left Column * *
-
- N N>ew loggings (QSL).
-
- Every new entry is checked for duplications against existing start-
- time and frequency data.
-
- Each "logging" entered into the database is assigned an individual
- record number. These record numbers appear in all viewing formats
- and are used to locate information on file.
-
- Press <F1> for HELP SCREEN on data entry codes.
- The codes P and PP (P=PP="pending verification") allow you to enter
- information to be used for FUTURE loggings (for example, a listing
- found in a magazine).
-
- If the QSL? option "Y" is selected, a personalized QSL request will
- be printed containing your profile data (as entered in menu option
- "P" below) along with the option of including the broadcast station
- mailing address (as entered in menu option "D" below).
-
- If the broadcast station mailing address feature is selected, the
- program will present you with all BC stations for the country of
- the "logging" that have been entered using option "D" below. You
- can update/select a BC station address from the displayed list.
-
- Three copies of the QSL request will be printed - original, 2nd
- request, and a file copy. If printing is stopped before all three
- copies are printed, program will ask you whether the QSL fields in
- the "logging" record should still be updated. The QSL request also
- can be saved to an ASCII file named with the first 8 letters of the
- country along with a .TXT extension (i.e. Venezuela=VENEZUEL.TXT).
-
- NOTE: Any line comments in the "logging" record will appear in the
- QSL request. After printing, you can re-edit the line comments
- (menu option "F" below) to include additional information that
- you did not want to appear in the QSL request.
-
- There are two "marks" (folding guides) present on the printed QSL
- request, just below the RECEPTION REPORT banner, so the BC station
- address will appear when using a window envelope.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- F F>ind loggings (QSL).
-
- There are 2 ways to locate records: "browse" all records and by a
- specific record number.
-
- Selecting the "browse" format displays all records pre-sorted by
- start-time. Records can then be sorted by Country, Frequency, or
- Log-Date. In addition, a QSL reply list can be generated showing
- all records in which a QSL was requested but not received (Q?="Y"
- and R="N").
-
- From the "browse" format, an individual record number can be
- selected for detailed viewing, editing, or deletion. When action
- on the chosen record is completed, program returns to "browse."
-
- Press <F1> for HELP SCREEN on data entry codes, if needed.
-
- You can bypass "browse" and display any record by entering the
- specific record number. Information in the record on display can
- then be edited - or the entire record can be deleted.
-
- When viewing or editing a record, you have the option of generating
- a new QSL request. Program will automatically present option when
- QSL="Y".
-
- NOTE: Records marked for deletion will still appear in the "browse"
- format until you return to the MAIN MENU.
-
- When any records are deleted, the remaining records may be assigned
- new record numbers, depending on their location to the deletion(s).
- All reports should be reprinted at this point. An on-screen
- reminder will appear if this is necessary.
-
- P P>ersonal data.
-
- Information entered here will be used for QSL requests, listening
- schedules, and return address labels.
-
- Press <F1> for HELP SCREEN on latitude and longitude, if needed.
-
- E E>xport.
-
- Follow on-screen instructions to create an ASCII file (LOG2.TXT from
- logs or MAIL2.TXT from BCSs) in the most common delimited format.
- Allows you to share records with other owners of PC SHORTWAVE
- MONITOR(tm) R2.0 and higher. These files also can be exported to most
- flat-file databases having fields arranged in the same order of
- access.
-
- NOTE: Once LOG2.TXT or MAIL2.TXT has been created, you should remove
- it from program directory. E>xport option overwrites any existing
- LOG2.TXT/MAIL2.TXT file found in the program directory.
-
-
-
-
-
- I I>mport.
-
- Follow on-screen instructions to import another user's LOG2.TXT or
- MAIL2.TXT file and add the records to your file.
-
- NOTE: Once transaction is done, remove LOG2.TXT/MAIL2.TXT from program
- directory to avoid duplicate importing or overwriting (E>xport
- option) of the file.
-
- C C>olors-screen.
-
- Colors and options may vary based on your type of monitor. Select
- color number for standard (foreground/background), enhanced
- (highlight bar & fields), and border. Type in number, press <PgDn>
- if "blinking" desired, then tab cursor to next option and repeat.
- When done, press <Esc> to exit and save colors. The program will
- always start up with color combination selected.
-
- Press <F1> for HELP SCREEN, if needed.
-
- R R>eindex.
-
- This utility will attempt to repair a corrupted database (log
- record[s] out of sequence) that can be caused by a power failure
- during data entry, or running the program with insufficient RAM
- memory. Accidentally running this utility will not harm the
- existing database.
-
- * * Center Column * *
-
- Menu options 1 thru 6 below are reports that can be printed and/or
- saved to disk in ASCII code. Option 8 (labels) also can be printed
- and/or saved. If saved to disk as ASCII code, all reports and mailing
- labels are placed in file REPORTS.TXT and are accumulative. Saving new
- ASCII information will ADD TO an existing REPORTS.TXT file. You must
- edit/delete file.
-
- 1 1>MASTER LOG. [PRINT/ASCII FILE]
-
- This will generate a listening schedule containing every "logging"
- record in the master file.
-
- 2 2>COUNTRY. [PRINT/ASCII FILE]
-
- Enter name of country and generate a listening schedule containing
- only those "logging" records for that particular entry.
-
- 3 3>BANDWIDTH. [PRINT/ASCII FILE]
-
- Generate a listening schedule containing all "logging" records
- falling within the entered upper and lower frequency limits.
-
- 4 4>UNIQUE. [PRINT/ASCII FILE]
-
- Enter any combination of LANGUAGE, PROGRAM, and BROADCASTING TO
- codes and generate a listening schedule containing only those
- "logging" records that meet the entry specification(s).
- 5 5>QSLs. [PRINT/ASCII FILE]
-
- Create a report listing all "loggings" in which QSLs have been
- requested but not received.
-
- 6 6>ALPHA LIST. [PRINT/ASCII FILE]
-
- When entering new records, try to be consistent in naming the
- country/station listened to.
-
- Entering BBC for one record and BBC WORLD SERVICE for another
- record will cause these entries to appear at different locations on
- reports even if the "logging" times are the same.
-
- This alphabetical listing will help you spot these problem records,
- and they can then be corrected by editing (Option "F" above).
-
- 7 7>LOGSHEET(S). [PRINT]
-
- These blank forms are identical with the data-entry screen. In
- addition, all data entry codes are listed for reference. You can
- record "loggings" which can then be entered into the program at
- your convenience.
-
- 8 8>LABELS [PRINT/ASCII FILE]
-
- Print broadcast station mailing address labels for QSL requests.
- Return address labels also can be printed. This option (8) uses
- compressed print format and relies on correct printer information
- entered in option "W" below.
-
- * * Right Column * *
-
- D D>ata-new BCS
-
- This option accesses a separate database containing information
- about the broadcasting station. All entries are checked for
- duplications based on name of country entered. Program will
- automatically ask whether this database should be used each time
- the QSL request option is selected.
-
- Press <F1> for HELP SCREEN, which will give you a running character
- count for the fields used in creating QSL mailing labels. This
- will prevent overwriting during label printing (option 8 above) as
- each line can hold a maximum of 40 characters and spaces.
-
- V V>iew-BCS
-
- Has the same format as the "F" option above but used with the
- broadcasting station database. In "browse," the records are first
- sorted by country name. The name of the country in the first
- record displayed appears between the reference arrows (><) at the
- top of the screen.
-
-
-
-
- S S>hell to DOS
-
- Allows you to leave the program temporarily. Type <EXIT> at the DOS
- prompt to return.
-
- NOTE: In order for SHELL to work properly, DOS must be able to find a
- copy of COMMAND.COM to load into memory. There also must be enough
- memory available to load another COMMAND.COM.
-
- W W>riter
-
- The information provided in this option will allow program to print
- labels in compressed mode. If your printer is not on list, select
- the CUSTOM option to input the correct printer codes for standard
- and compressed print.
-
- For example, the codes for an Okidata ML182 printer would be:
- CHR(29) - 17.1 characters per inch (compressed)
- CHR(30) - 10 characters per inch (standard)
- No "escape sequence" is needed for this printer.
-
- X X>-EXIT.

- * * * INSTALLATION * * *
-
- PC SHORTWAVE MONITOR(tm) will run on any IBM-compatible computer with
- 640K of RAM and DOS V3.3 or higher. While it is recommended that the
- program be run from a hard drive, it also will run on a 1.2M 5-1/4"
- floppy and a 720K/1.44M 3-1/2" diskette. The maximum number of records
- stored is limited by the size of the media used.
-
- If upgrading from R2.0 or higher, see file UPGRADE.DOC for
- instructions.
-
- To auto-install (new users) the program from a floppy diskette onto
- your hard drive, type: <FDTOHD>. During installation, C:\ will be
- searched for CONFIG.SYS - if not found, the file will be created. If
- found, it will NOT be changed automatically. You must check the FILES
- and BUFFERS statements for FILES=20, BUFFERS=8. These are the minimum
- values that must appear. Use an ASCII text editor to make the
- necessary changes (see REMEMBER: below).
-
- For manual installation (new users) use the following instructions:
-
- 1. For 5-1/4"(1.2M only) & 3-1/2" floppy diskette drive users:
-
- You may want the working copy to be a "bootable" diskette. If so, a
- config.sys file also must be present on the diskette in order for
- the program to work correctly.
-
- To create this file on the diskette, type the following:
-
- copy con config.sys <ENTER>
- FILES=20 <ENTER>
- BUFFERS=8 <ENTER>
- <F6> <ENTER>
-
- If you don't want the working diskette to be bootable, than this
- same config.sys file must appear on whatever diskette you are using
- to boot up your computer. First check to see if this file already
- exists. If it does, view the file by typing the following:
-
- type config.sys <ENTER>
-
- If the FILES and BUFFER settings are already in config.sys, the
- values shown above are the minimum values that must appear.
-
- REMEMBER: a config.sys file that already exists may contain other
- information important to your computer's operation.
- DO NOT USE THE ABOVE "COPY CON" PROCEDURE IF A CONFIG.SYS FILE
- ALREADY EXISTS - A TEXT EDITOR SUCH AS DOS EDLIN WILL ALLOW YOU TO
- CHANGE AND ADD INFORMATION WITHOUT ERASING THE REMAINING DATA.
-
- Also, a newly created or edited config.sys file does not take effect
- until the computer is rebooted.
-
-
-
-
-
- PAGE 8 0F 9
- 2. For hard disk drive users:
-
- A config.sys file must appear in the root directory of whatever
- drive you are booting the computer from (commonly c:\).
-
- Use the same procedures for the creation of this file as in step #1
- above.
-
- To install the program on your hard drive (i.e. c:\), in a directory
- (i.e. "pcswm") place the program diskette in the A drive and type
- the following (making sure c:\> or c> is displayed at the DOS
- prompt):
-
- md\pcswm <ENTER>
- copy a:\*.* c:\pcswm <ENTER>
-
- To run the installed program, the commands would be:
-
- cd\pcswm <ENTER>
- sw3 <ENTER>
-
- 3. PC SHORTWAVE MONITOR(tm) R3.0 contains 25 files:
-
- SW3.EXE, LOG2.DBF, MAILDATA.DBF, CTRYSRT2.NTX, DATESRT2.NTX,
